It’s been 3 decades and Chi Rock Nation still stands as arguably the oldest, still active, and largest hip-hop crew to come out of Chicago. With membership from almost every 606 zip code and around the world, representing every element, and spanning 3 generations, Chi Rock is about to celebrate its 30th anniversary with an extravaganza at Subterranean on Saturday July 5th, and everyone is invited!
In true Chi Rock (Respect Our Creative Kids) fashion, and as a testament to their ongoing commitment to service and community, 100% of the proceeds from their anniversary party will fund their Annual Back-To-School Jam scheduled in August. This yearly event collects donated school supplies and distributes them to students at a family friendly festival with music, live performances, free haircuts, free mini manicures, face painting, a magic show, food, live art, dancing, and so much more.
Founded in the mid-1980’s when the Chicago hip-hop scene was still very young, a few unintentional visionaries saw the need to form a crew that would work to preserve, expose, and support real hip-hop in Chicago, while also using the elements of the culture as a vehicle to uplift the communities of Chicago. Some of the earliest members of Chi Rock circa ’84-’85 were Faheem, JVC, Pacman, Clok Ten, Dee, Spike 153, Point Blank, J.P. Dee, Hangman Henro, Chilly T, Speedy, Scope, and, Ice Cee (R.I.P). In 1995 Ang 13 joined Chi Rock and recalls: “Hip-hip was in its infancy stage back then. Everything was new, so almost every style was fresh!” She acknowledges CRN for helping her build ‘The Props Awards’, which she considers one of her great accomplishments. She states assuredly “Without the help of Chi-Rock and the members of the culture at that time it would have never happened. They were in full attendance!” she recounts.

Today Chi Rock Nation is bigger, bolder, and more diverse than ever. One of the largest hip-hop crews in the world, it’s still operating and playing a major role in promoting real hip-hop, and committed to preserving and supporting the culture. Chi Rock members produce and host numerous events on a regular basis, maintain publications, and are highly active in the arts and neighborhood communities. Founding members Pacman and Faheem see Chi Rock Nation and its members as playing a key role in keeping Chicago’s hip-hop culture real and authentic by not allowing it to be taken over by the streets. Clok Ten, who joined in ‘93 asserts “Not even religion has created the level of peace that has been created by uniting the 4 elements of hip-hop.” He predicts the next 30 years of Chi Rock to be classic!
